Industrialization in our society is often portrayed as being negative, with a lot of people associating it with lack of freedom and overall social conformity. I find this concept to be best portrayed in the Black Mirror episode titled 5 Million Merits. In this episode everybody in the known world lives in a giant facility where they peddle on bikes to earn "merits" which is a form of currency in their world. People then use these merits to improve there lives in anyway possible. This is the daily life of most of the people excisting in this world. However they don't know why they are peddling or the purpose that it serves, essentially making them cogs in a machine
Most of the people that live there have presumably excepted the reality of their situation and aim to live there best lives within the rules of the system. A character named Dustin seems to be enjoying his life despite the repetitive nature of it. However the main character Bing is quite unhappy with the system and the way it treats people. It can be seen through this how industrialization has different effects on different people. Some people are able to thrive in a highly industrialized society while others find it challenging.Forcing everybody to peddle day in and day out has made artistic expression far less rewarding. To the point where the main character is mesmerized by a girl ability it sing because its the first "real" thing that he had experienced in a long time. I believe that if done wrong industrialization can stifle artistic expression. This is because when something is Industrialized  the people within that system are less likely to think outside the box.

  1. Hi Baraka, I really enjoyed reading your post and seeing how you tied Black Mirror into this week's topic. I think Black Mirror, overall, is a great example of the detrimental possibilities that technology and industrialization can have on culture, interpersonal relationships, and (as you mentioned) artistic expression. Going off of your post, I wonder why some people assimilate easier to a "highly industrialized society" while others are more resistant?
